2) Identify and describe five online services that you would like to see offered on e-Government websites in Brunei.

1) Renewing License:

Describe:  The current method we are practising is to go over to Land Transport Department or any post office in Brunei to renew our license. This current process is time consuming and would be more efficient if it can be done online. The government should consider setting up this service online as the benefits are highly considerable. The steps required can be filling of forms online and sending in the application with just a click of mouse and wait for a few working days for the license to be ready. Payments for license should be done online. In terms of collecting the license, it can be either delivery or pick up when license is ready. If the delivery option is chosen, charges of a few dollars will be needed for the service.

Justify: Internet has become a part of our lives so with this method being introduced, it is less time consuming, no queuing required and you do not have to hassle when it comes to looking for parking. It is also convenient whereby you can get your renewed license sent to your doorsteps.

2) Applying Visa Online:

Describe: Most countries including Brunei Darussalam require people to apply for visa before they are permitted to enter the country either for leisure or work purposes. For people who wishes to visit Brunei, if the applying visa service is available online, visitors do not have to go over to the Brunei Embassy in their respective countries in order to apply for visa.

Justify: With this method being introduced, it actually saves a lot of time as you are not required to go over to the embassy personally to get it done. It is an advantage as well for those people who lives very far away from the Brunei Embassy and had to travel back and forth just to get the visa done. Not only it is less time consuming, it is also convenient.

3) Paying Tabung Amanah Pekerja (TAP) Online:

Describe: All the public and private organizations in Brunei are required to pay TAP to each and every of their employees who are Bruneians and Permanent Residents of Brunei. This system works in a way that every month, 5% of their salaries are deducted and paid into the TAP account for future benefits when they retire. With this service made available online, the employee or person in charge does not have to go to TAP office to queue and pay by the end of a certain due date every month. Usually when the due date is near, a lot of people are queuing to pay for TAP because late payments will be charged. So with just a few clicks of mouse, employers can pay online wherever they are in the world as long as there is internet connection.

Justify: This method is very convenient because most employers are busy and they tend to forget the due date therefore if payments can be done online, they do not have to fill in the form and waste their precious time queuing.

4) Booking Public Sports Facilities:

Describe: People who wishes to do sports like booking of national courts; they have to make a call or walk-in in order to get a court. Most of the time, the courts are usually full so you’d be wasting your time when you walk-in hoping for available courts but there are none. Also, schools in Brunei usually celebrate sports day and with the online service being introduced, it will enable the public to book courts and fields online. This service also enables them to choose the courts that they would like to book and they can make their bookings in advance.

Justify: Without the hassle of calling or walking-in in order to get a court, online method would be a lot easier as you can get confirmations instantly whether or not the court is available on the day and time you want to play.

5) Checking Results Online:

Describe: In Brunei, when you sit for PSR, O’ Level and A’ Level Examination, you usually have to check your results either through the Ministry of Education, through your respective schools or the text message service in which you are being charged. The government should consider setting up an online service whereby you can check your results instantly when it is out without having to go to the school to check or having to wait for them to publish the results. The online service can be that you enter your centre and candidate number, Identity Card Number and other verifications to prove that you are the student. After verifying, you can get your results online instantly without having to squeeze with all your fellow friends to check your results from the schools’ notice board. Aside from this, people who use the text message service just to know their results can save up to a few dollars as the charge is not cheap at all for a text message. The mobile services use this opportunity to raise the price as people are more concerned about their results than the price so people won’t think twice before doing it.

Justify: With this method, parents do not have to rush home in between work hours to send their children to school in order to get their results. It is convenient and that you wouldn’t have to worry that everyone can see your results! Also, even when you’re outstation, you can still get your results instantly without having to trouble anyone to check it for you!

All the services we suggested above, there should be instant reply when we apply for it online whether the submission is approved or disapproved. Feedbacks and enquiries that occur after the submission process can cause problems such as miscommunication which can lead to the delaying of our application. When this happens, our main purpose of suggesting the services online in the first place would be meaningless.
